God’s Mandate for our Careers

Summary: This paper is a four page (20 minutes talk-maximum) presentation that highlighted some common but ‘dominion success factors’ applicable to most professions often neglected. Personal experiences have been shared on applying some propositional knowledge. The aim is to make every young professionals to be gainfully engaged during academic or professional preparations in order to be gainfully employed thereafter considering the job opportunities in their career sectors.
Reference is made to the statistics of the population of Nigeria and the Youth demography to focus on why the youth must distinguish themselves in their chosen careers knowing that about 70 million young Nigerians are waiting for the same opportunity passionately. There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. When you spend 18 hours in a day on (internet, phones and sleep etc, ask yourself again “is the outcome of my activities going to make me the head and not the tail?”
God’s mandate is clear and you can become the author of your ambitions. Knowing that you did not study hard and struggle in life to become a mere machine. Life is not only about career and office work alone-There is more to Life. We need wisdom to know that certain jobs and career choices are fundamentally incompatible with meaningful engagement of time for social, spiritual, family and emotional activities etc. Some senior executives have found themselves in the sorry states where career abattoirs of human souls have denied them God’s mandate of good success. When you called me “our ancestor” I figured out quickly I should not talk about the young generation as if I did not have anything to do with it. Truly I was once young and I am getting older. But you know what, I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. Now you can start your new generation of righteous people who delight themselves in the Lord and see if God will not give you the desires of your hearts. This paper also shared some practical steps I took while seeking for career path in the oil and gas sector rooted in God’s word, able to build everyone into leadership to see the iceberg before it hits the Titanic.

Road Map to some Dominion success factors

Dominion, literally means “that which is mastered.” in Genesis 1:26-29, mankind’s role as master of the earth is clearly ordained. When you are in charge of something or rule it, you have dominion over it. A dominion that is in the image, or likeness, of God. Humans, in other words, are to rule over creation in a way that is consistent with the way God rules.

Harnessing the earth’s potential would include, among other things, mining its riches (Oil & Gas, Gold etc), cultivating its fields, using its trees for lumber, and domesticating its animals so they might be used in service of humankind. Lessons from the ants to the Lion teach us self motivation for our Career Path.

Birds in the sky: A quantitative analysis of hummingbird wings shows that they generate lift more efficiently than the best micro-helicopter blades. The findings could lead to more powerful, bird-inspired robotic vehicles.

Fish in the sea: The Navy also realized that they could learn how to improve the speed of their boats and submarines by studying how dolphins are able to swim fast and dive deep.
The research ended up going much further than that. Dolphins have been trained to detect enemy swimmers, and this was used in both the Vietnam war as well as the Persian Gulf war.
Subdue the earth: Subduing the Earth or bringing it under control involves the following: Responsibly using the Earth’s resources such as coal, oil, iron and mineral wealth, without exploitation, harming or polluting the environment. Shale oil extraction is an industrial process for unconventional oil production. This process converts kerogen (a mixture of organic chemical compounds that make up a portion of the organic matter in sedimentary rocks ) in oil shale into shale oil by pyrolysis, hydrogenation, or thermal dissolution. The resultant shale oil is used as fuel oil or upgraded to meet refinery feedstock specifications by adding hydrogen and removing sulfur and nitrogen impurities. The reason for drop in oil price in 2015.

General Counsel – Pursuing a career path e.g. in the Oil and Gas Sector

From the invitation given to me to speak to undergraduate who are very passionate about pursuing a career path in the oil and gas sector and acquaint them with the opportunities therein. May I quickly double-check with you that this session is only for those already passionate? My job description is not to make you passionate. To make you passionate is covered in another session with a special consultant. You can find details in Proverb 6: 6-11. Please check in case you are the wrong person in the right place.

In any Life jungle, the 3 grand rules for predators to remain in competition and survive is to (1) stay hungry (2) maintain anger (3) refer to rules 1 &2. These rules have helped the hungry and conquering lions not to miss their targets. Really, what are you hungry for in Life, Just Career ? A hungry man is an angry man. Anger is not always sin. There is a type of anger of which the bible approves.

  1. Need to have a vision / Passion: You are not supposed to have a vision and lack passion the same time. But I have seen people substitute interest for passion. Most Nigerians are interested in football including the physically challenged, but you sure know a passionate football fan when you see one. Some Christians are interested about Heaven but their passion for things that further pull them from Heavenly experience while on earth and life after are however, stronger. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. It does not mean that where your heart is that is where the treasure is. There is an urgent need for strategic alignment in mastering the deeds of good success for a great personal brand and career.
The Vanguard Newspaper- Dec 17, 2013 published that The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Tuesday said that 54 per cent of Nigerian youths were unemployed in 2012. This was contained in the “2012 National Baseline Youth Survey Report’’ issued in Abuja by the NBS in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Youths Development. International bodies forecasted by 2nd quarter 2015, Nigerian youth who are between 20 – 40 years of age will be about 51 % out of Nigeria’s population of above 175 million people. Even if an ant gets this message, it plans ahead, self motivated, does not wait to be told.
  2. Take a shot of a SELFIE. When you take your photo yourself, you are likely to keep the best shot. “An empowered life begins with serious personal questions about oneself. Those answers bare the seeds of success.” Ask yourself what you are really good at and love doing? What you are good at but hate doing? What do you love doing but are not that great at? What are you not good at and hate doing? etc
I was once in a career cross road. Just because I made distinctions in mathematics and biology, I was in the medical class during my Higher School Certificate program and same time I enrolled leisurely to study engineering in JAMB. Thank God at an early age I had some roles / duties in God’s house where Dr. N. Offor found me and counseled and I ended up reading Engineering. In life we meet several cross roads but I have learned indeed when you delight yourself in the Lord He will give you the desires of your heart. Not all careers are meant for you. In my case, I just wanted to read medicine because of grandma. Remember you and I are living epistles (letters) by God that others may see and glorify our Father.
  3. The third rule is to refer to rules 1& 2 above.
There are thousand rules on career success published. These ones are not to add to the endless statistics but to redirect our attention that the word of God is spirit and they are Life. Not mere motivational talks.
In this dispensation we are not in doubt if God’s spirit is poured out on all flesh but rather whether our young men are seeing visions.” We are to lend to others, this also include wealth of knowledge etc.
As modern science is developing, we should discover new ways to carry out God’s divine mandate as His representatives on earth. Mandate is “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it” In short, the earth exists for man’s benefit waiting for increased numbers of ideas. There are a lot of things waiting to be discovered and done in God’s vineyard through us in our careers. It’s good to hunt for a job but better knowing the job is out there searching for us because our mandate is to increase in ideas to sufficiently make the profession of unemployment jobless. We are not technological spectators.

Acquaintance with the opportunities in the Oil and gas sector- Moving up in a Career Path

A career cluster is group of careers that share common features. A career path is a smaller group of jobs within a career cluster that use similar skills. Each career cluster contains several career paths.
You can start in a lower-lever job in a career path and, with more education and experience, move up within that path. Engineering is a path within the “Project and Construction” career cluster. You can start as a mechanical / Electrical /Civil Engineer and become an Engineering Manager. We also have Production path. You can start as a Chemical Engineer, Laboratory to become a Production Manager. A career path helps you find out how you might move from one job to another within a career cluster.

Nigeria’s proven oil reserves are estimated as 35.3 billion barrels (5.61×109 m3). Its reserves make Nigeria the tenth most petroleum-rich nation, and by far the most affluent in Africa. The most productive region of the nation is the coastal Niger Delta Basin in the Niger Delta or “South-south” region which encompasses 78 of the 159 oil fields. Natural gas reserves are well over 187 trillion ft³ (2,800 km³), the gas reserves are three times as substantial as the crude oil reserves. A lot of opportunities now exist in Nigeria following the introduction of Nigerian / Local Content regulations in 2010.

Major International Oil Companies (IOC) includes Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited –SPDC (Dutch), Chevron (American), Exxon-Mobil – (American) Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPNU) ,Agip (Italian) -Nigerian Agip Oil Company Limited (NAOC) ,Total (French) – Total Upstream Nigeria Limited (TUPNI), Texaco (now merged with Chevron) , Addax.

Independents and local operators are about 32 e.g NNPC , Dubril oil company, Conoil producing ,NPDC, Yinka Folawiyo Pet Company Ltd, Moni Pulo Ltd etc. This list is continuously updated.

Marginal Field Operators are about 36 e.g. Oando PLC, Frontier Oil Ltd, Platform Petroleum Corporation, Suffolk Petroleum Services Ltd,Afren, Energia Company Ltd, Excel Exploration and Production services etc. Take out time to search on internet or attend technical conferences to know more.

Qualifications / Scholarships and Trainings

In Nigeria most IOCs require a relevant bachelor’s degree with minimum 2.1 for non-experienced candidates and minimum 2.2 for experienced candidates. This is why you must aim for a better result.

Scholarship schemes also are available e.g. TOTAL sponsors a National merit scholarship for undergraduates in Nigerian universities. Open to registered full time 100/200 level in recognized Nigerian universities. For details visit www.scholarships.totalsdd.com. Shell Intensive Programme (SITP) was one.

Graduates Intensive training programs to provide on the job training exist also for OND & BSC Holders. These are sponsored majorly by the IOCs. The Nigerian Content Laws Act 2010 has also made it compulsory for most of these companies to embark on training young Nigerian graduates with good qualification via the Human Capacity Development as part of the conditions to execute project in Nigeria.

Job Categories
Drilling any employment related to the spudding and drilling of wells, as well as reworking of wells.
Extraction includes engagement in operating, developing, and producing oil and natural gas fields, including exploration and all production work up to the point of shipment from production facility.
Support involves performing supporting activities for oil and natural gas operations e.g. accountants, Lawyers, Public affairs etc. This accounts for about 50% of jobs in the oil and gas sector.

My Personal Experience-I graduated and knew I had the capacity to have made a better Bachelors degree result, I borrowed money for my Masters degree the same year I completed my National Youth Service Corp (NYSC). Yes I ‘borrowed money ‘with a clear plan to pay back which I did. Before I completed my NYSC, I had a clear directive from God to give all my earnings saved during my NYSC to roof a local church of CGM where I served. I obeyed God and the covenant blessings gave good success. Just like a camera does not convey the fragrance of a rose flower, you need to have your own testimony.
Do you see a truly competent worker? He will serve kings rather than working for ordinary people. In the early 1990 I had the opportunity to have my internship with a subsidiary of the NNPC. My boss thereafter asked me to recommend students from my University who could continue with them after me. I remember Bro. Hope Okhuoya was one of those recommended. I had a mechanic called Emmanuel. He was skillful, truthful and passionate about taking care of my only car. When I had to relocate, I gave him the car in 2008 which he still uses. In whatever you do, let skill & faithfulness distinguish you from others. Prov. 3:3-4.
